International Fisheries Negotiation Assistance

Background

The Korea Overseas Fisheries Cooperation Center (KOFCC) has, since its establishment in 2012, maintained a cooperative relationship with the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries of the Republic of Korea (MOF) to help the Korean delegation better engage in international fisheries meetings including the FAO Committee on Fisheries (COFI) and Regional Fisheries Management Organizations (RFMOs).

For this purpose, the KOFCC operates the International Negotiation Support Team, whose policy analysts work side by side with government officials of the MOF, attend international fisheries meetings with them and provide advice and recommendations before and during meeting discussions to the Korean representatives.

Purpose

The team aims to contribute to the efforts that the Republic of Korea makes as a responsible fishing nation to recover and maintain the valuable fisheries resources and prevent, deter and eliminate the illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing, which will ultimately further contribute to the work of the global fisheries community to achieve the sustainable fisheries around the world.
